Cesspools

Cesspools operate as well as the soil they are installed into.  Most cesspools only require solids removal every 5 years or so.  Make sure to ask for the solids to be pumped.

What to know when you need service:

bulletCesspool port access location:  You need to have your cesspool exposed for service. Generally, if you can find the perimeter of the concrete lid, the center is where to dig.
bulletInflow to outflow ratio is what matters.  If you have more water going into the cesspool than flowing out of the cesspool, eventually you will back up.  Address leaks and install low flow  fixtures to reduce inflow.  Ground treatment is available for increasing outflow (see Cesspool Restoration - Terralift).
bullet80% of cesspools will respond to a single pumping.  You may opt to apply chemicals to address the buildup on the bottom and walls of your cesspool.
